As a single parent with school age children, Nicola decided it was time to get back in to employment when her youngest daughter started school.

Nicola has had a range of jobs throughout her working life, from Production Operative to Support worker and a Nail technician. As a Coastline Housing tenant, and unsure of what to do next, she enrolled on their 8-week Coastline Construct work placement programme. Based at the Coastline’s housing Roundhouse Way, Higher Nansloe development site in Helston, Nicola began work experience. It was at this point that she joined the Positive People Coast to Coast programme for support during this period. Positive People supported her to get her Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), funding her transport and childcare costs.

Initially Nicola worked with the Work Skill Training Academy team from Cornwall College to gain her CSCS labourers’ card and gain initial skills in trades such as brick laying. She went on to work with Champion (https://www.fcgroundworks.com/) who were working on the ground works within the site. She helped to install streetlights and paths and kerbs. It was this work experience that sparked her interest in becoming a Groundworker and Plant driver.

After completing her work placement successfully, she continued to receive support from the Positive People programme and went on to complete an IT course with Questions and Answers CIC (https://www.qacic.co.uk/) in Redruth to upskill her IT skills.

In September, she started a Level 2 Plant Operative course at Duchy College, where she is specialising in driving a telescopic handler (Telehandler). The course leader commented that Nicola had taken on the hardest piece of equipment and is doing very well. He described her as having a very exact operational technique.

To give Nicola continued support into a job after her course she has enrolled onto the Work Routes programme run by Reed in Partnership. This programme will support her preparation for employment when she completes her course in Jan 2020.

Nicola is an inspirational person who is highly motivated to build a career in the construction industry and we believe she has the drive and character to succeed and be able to build a good future for herself and her children.
