Active Plus celebrated the contribution of older people in Plymouth at a VIP presentation on Monday 4th April. A group of people aged from 50 – 75 have been meeting with the injured ex-service personnel from Active Plus every Monday at The Engage Centre in St.Levan Road as part of the Big Lottery funded Active Plus Communities Plymouth programme.
Participant Steve Harrison from Plymouth said: “It got me out of the house. It was nice to be able to talk and to be listened to. It has helped me and I’ve really enjoyed myself.”
Dave Street, Military Veteran and course leader for Active Plus said: “Active Plus Communities is all about confidence, connections and community. Older people and military veterans work together to make new friends and try new things. We have great fun along the way. Both groups have things in common such as experiencing isolation, loneliness, ill-health or other challenges in life. This programme helps us all to help ourselves through helping others.”
Project Manager Lucy Richards added: We are also delighted that so many local organisations have joined us to share information about what they do and the support they can offer older people in Plymouth. We are especially grateful to Plymouth Community Homes who have been really supportive of the project”
Plymouth Community Homes Chief Executive, John Clark spoke to the group about the importance of motivation and confidence and praised the work of the Active Plus team. The group were also joined by deputy Lord Mayor and deputy Lady Mayoress of Plymouth, Councillor Richard Stephen Ball and his wife Dianne, and councillors Sam Davey and Pauline Murphy. Presenting the certificates, the deputy Lord Mayor spoke about the contribution of the third sector in Plymouth, the work that community groups do and their valued contribution to the local economy.
